Topics of discussion

We went over each and every agenda [may be found on our web site www.cuscaa.org ]

There were a good deal of discussion on each and every topic. In summary we agreed to the following.

1. To let all CUSC Alumni be aware of our organization and get input from other Alumni. All of us need to spread the news to our friends. That is a very simple way to expand our organization.

2. To raise money to dedicate an award in the name of Satyen Bose or Meghnad Saha. The resolution was to name the award as CUSCAA award.

3. When a new student comes to US, we need to have some volunteers in this country to help them to relocate and make their visit more welcoming.

4. We already started a page on our web site on helping students from CUSC. We need to add more faculty names there. These faculties can guide the interested students to join US universities.

5. To expose our web site www.cuscaa.org more to the CUSC students, we need to put advertisements on Calcutta local newspapers. That’s the only way the students back home would be aware of our web page and they can get help.

6. Many of us who are in the academic field, get lot of books from the publishers and we do not use them all. Without spending any money (except the shipping cost) we can send those books to CUSC.

7. Similarly, as we get newer scientific equipments in our laboratories in North America, the older ones, even though they are still usable, can be sent to CUSC. The only cost is the shipping. But it’s a much bigger effort to find the people here who has these old equipments and to locate places in CUSC who need them.

8. To raise money to help build the new Technology Campus of Calcutta University (The details may be found on our web page www.cuscaa.org )

The Very First Positive Response

Here is an email I received from Subal DasGupta. I am excited to see that Subalda spent some time on the issue of raising money to help build the new Technology Campus of Calcutta University. Please feel free to comment on this issue.

Dear Dilip,

I am calling you by your first name because you are much younger than me. I hope you do not mind. I have gone through Professor A. K. Das Gupta's appeal and would like to see what we can do. The goal is to raise money which is at least a very well defined goal. Let us start a discussion on this through e-mail. There are many of us in North America who regularly donate to the University in North America where they did their Ph. D. It should not be too difficult to turn our attention for once to Calcutta University.

The number that was quoted was one million dollar. This may be too ambitious but that is my perception. I like to know what you think.

How should we go about this?

1) should we prepare a document (based on Dr. Das Gupta's write-up) and include that when we contact alumni?

2) when we appeal we should state a guideline for donations. One should not set it at too low of course. One should not set it at too high either because the number of contributors will fall off.

3) We should try to make a comprehensive list of our alumni. I can take the responsibility of making the list from Canada. But the number in the USA must be at least twenty times more. How do we go about making the list?

4) Probably when we contact new people, we should let them know about what CUSCAA has done in the past so that people know that this did not spring up in one day.

Please send a copy of this to the President(?) of CUSCAA ( the actuarist). I do not know his e-mail address. Please send me his e-mail address. I am sending a copy of this to Partha Ghose who gave the last talk in NABC and it seems this sort of discussion has taken place in other seminars. He gave me his e-mail address as parthasg@aol.com

I am willing to spend sometime on this effort on a regular basis.

CUSCAA is going to hold a meeting with Calcutta University Science College Alumni at the 21th Banga Sammelan.  A large number of Bengalese from all over the Northern America come to this Banga Sammelan. Since a large number of them went to CUSC, we hope to spread the news of our effort organizing our Alumni Association which we formed about five years ago in Maryland, USA.

We will meet on July 7 (Saturday) at 12:30PM at a designated room. The exact room has not been assigned yet. But the information may be found at the registration desk. We are also hoping to put a few posters on the walls and distribute flyers at the Sammelan. Please keep your eyes open.

The objectives of the meeting are:

  1. To raise money to dedicate an award in the name of Satyen Bose or Meghnad Saha. It is difficult to ask people outside of our area for $20 annual fee. But it might not be that difficult to collect some money for a definite cause like an award mentioned earlier.
  2. When a new student comes to US, we need to have some volunteers in this country to help them to relocate and make their visit more welcoming.
  3. We already started a page on our web site on helping students from CUSC. We need to add more faculty names there. These faculties can guide the students interested to  join US universities.
  4. To expose our web site more to the CUSC students, we need to put advertisements on Calcutta local newspapers. That’s the only way, the students back home would be aware of our web page and they can get help.
  5. Many of us who are in the academic field, get lot of books from the publishers. And  we do not use them all. Without spending any money (except the shipping cost) we can send those books to CUSC.
  6. Similarly, as we get newer scientific equipments in our laboratories in USA, the older ones, even though they are still usable, can be sent to CUSC. The only cost is the shipping. But it’s a much bigger effort to find the people here who has these old equipments and to locate places in CUSC who need them.

Please come and join us to make it a successful meeting.
