Scholarships for West Bengal Students

Foundation for Excellence (www.ffe.org)
gives scholarships to poor & meritorious students of India for studies in
India. W Bengal received 185 scholarships. TN got some 1100 scholarships. Last
year FFE awarded some $800K to some 2300 students.
Original donor is Mr. Prabhu Goel who promised $10M and donates some 0.5M
every year. A second donor is Mr. Kanwal Rekhi who promised $5M and has
donated some $1M.
FFE works in a top down system. Coordinators are generally located in USA.
They introduce facilitators, whom they have met at least once, to FFE.
Facilitators, in W Bengal, find qualified students, get applications filled up,
send them to Mumbai and send reports of student performance.
There are some 25 coordinators and some 100 facilitators from W Bengal.
There is no facilitator from Malda, N Dinajpur and S Dinajpur. There is 1
facilitator each from Jalpaiguri & Coochbehar. There are 2 facilitators
each from Birbhum, Purulia, Burdwan & Howrah. A coordinator has 26
facilitators, one has 18 & a third has 14 facilitators, 10 being the FFE rule. A facilitator can submit 20 qualified applications. A coordinator can help
200 qualified students.
There are 10,000 schools and colleges eligible to receive scholarships.
More coordinators are needed. A person in USA can introduce a friend, a relative
, a Teacher, a Professor or other , whom the coordinator has met at least once,
as a facilitator.. The applications are sent to Mumbai. Completed applications
are sent to headquarters, reviewed and decisions made on them . Scholarships ,
on approved applications, are sent from Mumbai to adult students and to guardians
for minor students. The maximum amount of scholarship, subject to approval &
generally made to Engineering & Medical students staying in hostels, is Rs.
30K for a year. The family monthly income of a student should not exceed Rs.
7.5K per month. No donation is required from a coordinator or a
facilitator.

There is a paid Executive Director & Manager at Santa Clara and a paid
Manager at Mumbai. Most of the work is performed by volunteers.
